Home insurance covers your dwelling and its attached structures and your personal possessions in case they are destroyed or damaged after a covered accident. But what happens if one of your pet is hurt or passes away due to an accident at home. If a fire breaks out, for example, and your pet isn’t able to make it out, will you receive compensation?
The short and unfortunate answer is no. As a rule, pets are not considered possessions according to home insurance. If your pet passes away in a fire inside your home, you may not receive compensation for their passing, nor may you receive compensation for vet bills in case of an injured pet.
This doesn’t mean your pets are completely uncovered by home insurance, however.
Liability Home Insurance and Pets
The third section of home insurance is liability, which covers bodily injury and property damage claims that you may face, can cover these claims related to your pet. For example, say you have a pet that is shy around men and your friend comes over. Your male friend tries to pet your dog and your pet bites him out of fear.
This injury should be covered under your home insurance policy’s general liability coverage. It can cover the victim’s medical bills and simultaneously protect you from a related lawsuit. This also applies to incidents where your pet damages someone else’s property.
Exceptions to Home Insurance Coverage for Pets
Not all pets are covered under home insurance, however. Many insurance providers have limitations and exclusions to pets who are covered under their policies. Common exclusions include exotic pets such as reptiles and birds and certain dog breeds. Dog breeds that may be excluded from most home insurance policies include:
-
Siberian huskies
-
German shepherds
-
Certain wolf dogs
-
Rottweilers
-
Pit bulls
Ask your insurance agent if you are unsure whether or not your pet will be covered by your home insurance policy. Also keep in mind that the type of pet you own could have an affect on your home insurance premiums. Dogs present higher risk of damage or injury than cats on average, so insuring a dog can often cost more than insuring a cat.
If you believe you are paying too much for home insurance, speak with your insurance agent and compare quotes with multiple insurers in order to find ways to save money on important coverage.
